Science and Technology — Loosening the Grip on OpenAI?
The Economists
Since 2019, Microsoft has invested over $13 billion in OpenAI, transforming the once-struggling startup into a leader in generative artificial intelligence, now valued at $157 billion. In return, Microsoft has secured exclusive rights to utilize OpenAI's models on its Azure cloud platform. This partnership has proven beneficial, enabling OpenAI to enhance its large language models (LLMs), which have been integrated into Microsoft's software products. As a result, Azure has begun to close the gap with Amazon Web Services (AWS), with analysts reporting a 30% year-over-year revenue growth for Azure compared to 19% for AWS in the recent quarter. Eric Boyd, head of Microsoft's AI platform, noted that this collaboration has attracted 60,000 customers to Azure AI.
However, tensions are emerging within this partnership reminiscent of historical patronage relationships. Some OpenAI board members and investors are advocating for greater independence from Microsoft, particularly as they eye the significant portion of the cloud market still dominated by AWS. Microsoft is reportedly hesitant to ease its control due to competitive dynamics, yet some analysts argue that allowing OpenAI more freedom could ultimately benefit Microsoft's equity stake in the company. Regulatory scrutiny is also increasing, with investigations from the Federal Trade Commission and the UK's Competition and Markets Authority into their relationship. As both companies navigate these challenges, Microsoft has started diversifying its AI strategy by investing in rivals and renegotiating terms with OpenAI as it transitions to a profit-driven model.

Ford Motor Company has revised its 2024 earnings forecast to the lower end, now expecting adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) of around $10 billion, slightly exceeding Wall Street's third-quarter expectations. The automaker reported automotive revenue of $43.07 billion and adjusted earnings per share of 49 cents, surpassing estimates. Despite achieving its target of $2 billion in cost cuts, rising inflation and warranty costs have impacted overall performance. Ford's "Pro" commercial business and traditional operations led the earnings, while its electric vehicle unit reported losses of $1.22 billion. CEO Jim Farley emphasized a shift towards hybrids amid increasing vehicle inventory levels, which raised concerns among investors.

Philips' stock plummeted over 16% after the company lowered its sales outlook, citing a significant drop in demand from China due to weakened consumer confidence and an ongoing government anti-corruption campaign. In the third quarter, Philips reported revenue of $4.6 billion, falling short of Wall Street's expectation of $4.9 billion, although it exceeded earnings per share forecasts by 14%. The company now anticipates sales growth of only 0.5% to 1.5% for the year, down from a previous estimate of 3% to 5%, while maintaining its original outlook for markets outside China. CEO Roy Jakobs noted strong order flow and sales momentum in North America, driven by innovations in medical technology, but acknowledged that the Chinese market's downturn has had a substantial impact on overall performance.
Health and Wellness — What Is Pink Cocaine
The New York Times
Pink cocaine is a dangerous drug cocktail primarily composed of ketamine, often mixed with other illegal substances like methamphetamine, MDMA, and opioids, but it rarely contains actual cocaine. This substance gained notoriety following the death of former One Direction singer Liam Payne, who had pink cocaine in his system when he fell from a hotel balcony in Buenos Aires. Despite its name, the drug's pink color comes from food dye, and its unpredictable composition can lead to severe health risks, including anxiety, hallucinations, and cardiovascular issues. The drug is particularly concerning because it combines stimulants and depressants, which can create dangerous interactions in users. As its popularity rises in nightlife settings across the globe, experts warn that the variability in its formulation makes it akin to "playing Russian Roulette" with one's health.
