For instance, a boy might bully a girl he is secretly attracted to, expressing disdain instead of affection. Introduced by Sigmund Freud in the late 1800s, reaction formation serves to protect the ego from unacceptable thoughts or feelings, but can ultimately suppress one's authentic self and harm well-being. Recognizing this mechanism can be challenging, as individuals may passionately advocate for views that contradict their true feelings, such as a drug addict preaching against substance use. Research supports the existence of reaction formation, demonstrating that people often react to threats to their self-esteem by asserting beliefs opposite to their subconscious feelings.
