This new law, one of the most stringent globally, mandates that social media companies verify users' ages during the account registration process. Companies that fail to comply with these regulations could face fines of up to A$49.5 million (approximately $32 million) for violations.
Business and Finance — The Breakup of NewJeans
Billboard
South Korea's largest K-pop agency, Hybe, saw its market value drop by over $420 million after the girl group NewJeans announced their departure from ADOR, a subsidiary of Hybe, citing “mistreatment” and a breach of contract. During a press conference, the five-member group expressed their dissatisfaction with the agency's handling of their management and claimed that remaining with ADOR would only prolong their psychological distress. This announcement followed a protracted dispute between ADOR and Hybe, exacerbated by internal conflicts and allegations of workplace harassment. NewJeans had previously issued a legal notice to ADOR demanding changes, including the reinstatement of former CEO Min Hee-jin, who was instrumental in the group's success. Despite NewJeans' decision to leave, ADOR maintains that the contract remains valid and has requested the group to continue their collaboration.
Health and Wellness — It’s ok to Sleep More
UChicago Med
Research indicates that sleep patterns differ significantly between winter and summer in the Northern Hemisphere, with a tendency for individuals to sleep more during the winter months. A study involving pre-industrial societies found that participants averaged about one hour more sleep in winter compared to summer, with earlier bedtimes and wake times in winter. Similarly, a more recent study from Berlin suggested that patients with sleep-related difficulties experienced longer sleep duration in December than in June, although the overall total sleep time did not change significantly across seasons. Additionally, another investigation highlighted that as daylight increases in summer, sleep duration tends to decrease, correlating with later bedtimes and earlier wake times. This seasonal variation is thought to be influenced by factors such as changes in light exposure and ambient temperature, which affect our circadian rhythms and overall sleep architecture. Therefore, while individual experiences may vary, evidence generally supports the notion that people tend to sleep more in winter than in summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
